June is Asian Massage Special Month!

What is Thai massage?
Often referred to as “yoga massage,” Thai Massage (Nuad Boran) is an ancient healing system from Thailand that combines passive yoga movements, stretches, massage, and acupressure. Thai massage also includes the work on energy lines, known as “sen lines” in Thai medicine. The underlying intention of Thai massage is to clear blockages in the body’s energy lines, which in turn frees the body to be more balanced, flexible, and open. Thai massage is given on a mat on the floor, with the client dressed in loose, comfortable clothing.
Thai massage has many benefits. It can help relax and open the connective tissue in the body, encourage more mobility in the joints, and loosen muscle tissue in the body. Many of the same mind/body benefits of yoga may also be received through a Thai massage. A Thai massage at Healing Haven may include the use of foot pressure along various parts of the body, including the forearms, upper back, and thighs. The client will also passively be placed in several yoga positions, and will receive deep, liberating stretches.
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese healing art that is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure,” and a session does include finger pressure along various parts of the body, including the back, arms, legs, neck, and abdomen. Finger pressure is applied to energy lines, known as “meridians” in Chinese medicine. Like Thai massage, Shiatsu is also given on a mat on the floor with the client dressed in comfortable, flexible clothing. A client who receives a Shiatsu session will receive deep, rhythmic finger pressure along these energy lines in the body, with a goal of helping to restore more balance to the mind, body and spirit. Shiatsu sessions also include gentle range of motion, stretching, and massage to the head, face, hands, and feet. Shiatsu often feels like a gentle “dance” around the client, as it is given in a flow that circulates around the receiver’s body.
Shiatsu aims to not only bring more physical balance to the body, but also to help restore more emotional balance. In Chinese medicine, the body, mind and spirit are always viewed as being holistically connected.

CranioSacral Awareness Month
Apr 1, 2010 by
Michele Cunningham Fineout
Celebrate CranioSacral Therapy Awareness Month in April with a relaxing bodywork session that releases tensions to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve health and performance. Healing Haven Massage and Wellness's Michele Cunningham Fineout is offering a special introductory session for $35 for a half hour during the month of April 2010. CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, light-touch approach developed by Dr. John E. Upledger, one of Time magazine's "next wave of innovators," after years of university testing and clinical research.
Today CranioSacral Therapy is used by healthcare professionals worldwide to detect and relieve the root causes of chronic headaches and migraines, neck and back pain, fatigue, central nervous system disorders and many other conditions. Because it is so gentle, it has been shown to be effective for people of all ages, from newborns to seniors.
What Is CranioSacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on, whole-body method of releasing restrictions around the brain and spinal cord to enhance central nervous system performance and allow the body to self-correct. CranioSacral Therapy strengthens the body's natural healing processes to bolster resistance to disease and improve overall health. It has also proven effective in aiding individuals with a wide range of medical challenges associated with pain and dysfunction.
What Can I Expect From A CranioSacral Therapy Session?
A typical session lasts approximately an hour, and takes place in a quiet setting the patient fully clothed as you recline on a treatment table. The practitioner will stand or sit positioned at various points of your head, torso or feet. At times your practitioner may also support your limbs and spine while helping your body release accumulated
tension.
What you experience during a CST session is highly individual. Some people say they feel deeply relaxed, while others describe feeling unwinding sensations as the body releases tension. You may even recall circumstances surrounding a past trauma or injury that caused your body stress. While it doesn't occur in every session, this aspect of the process - called SomatoEmotional Release - is perfectly normal, and helps the body reverse dysfunction and restore optimal levels of mobility.
What Will I Experience After A Session?
The results can be as diverse as the treatment itself. You may leave in such a relaxed state that you feel like sleeping for hours. Or you may leave full of boundless energy. You may feel a decrease in pain or an increase in function immediately after the session, or the effects may develop gradually over the next few days.
Since CST helps the body resume its natural healing processes, it's common for your improvements to continue weeks after the session. You may also experience a reorganization phase as your body releases previously held patterns and adapts to a new state of wellness.
How Does CranioSacral Therapy Work?
Few structures have as much influence over the body's ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And few systems have as much impact on the central nervous system as the craniosacral system - the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.
Every day your body endures stresses and strains, and your structures work to compensate for them. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system, which can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord. The result is a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.
Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. Generally using about 5 grams of pressure - roughly the weight of a nickel - the CST practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system.
By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.
